About Citizen Academies
Citizen academies, or citizen police academies, have the common goal of creating better understanding and communication between police and the citizenry through education. The concept was introduced in England in the late 1970s. The Tacoma Police Department introduced the first citizen academy to Washington State in 1987, followed by Renton in 1989. The concept of educating citizens though a formal program is being applied to other areas including fire, neighborhood leadership, and topics related to specific government operations. The term "University" or " U" is sometimes used for the general programs. The list below is a sampling of information found on Websites. It is not meant to be a comprehensive listing.
