Slaughtering of Animals in Public View

More people are raising their own farm animals on a small scale.  There is also a demand for locally grown, humanely-raised, organic and/or pastured meat.  The general slaughter of animals is controlled by the state through Department of Agriculture regulations. (See Ch. 16-24 WAC and Ch. 16.50 RCW.)   The Washington State Department of Agriculture's Small Farm & Direct Marketing Handbook (), also known as the Green Book, provides an overview of regulations.

Some Washington local governments have passed provisions regarding the slaughtering of animals.   A few examples appear below.

  • Bridgeport Municipal Code Ch. 9.34 - Killing and Slaughtering of Animals in Public
  • Eatonville Municipal Code Sec. 6.30.130 (Adobe Acrobat Document) - Slaughtering
  • Quincy Municipal Code Ch. 9.18 - Slaughtering of Animals and Fowl
  • Toppenish Municipal Code Sec. 6.08.030  - Slaughtering Prohibited--Butchering Restricted
  • Yakima Municipal Code Sec. 6.20.044 - Slaughtering, Dressing and Butchering of Animals and Fowl
