I-695 Claims Police Department
October 4, 1999
KITTITAS, WASHINGTON - Some cities have been raising taxes in anticipation
of a revenue loss if Initiative 695 passes.
But the city of Kittitas is cutting spending.
It's getting rid of the police department -- the chief and two officers.
The city council approved the idea which Mayor Mel Wilson says will save $37,000
this year and $52,000 next year.
The city will contract with the sheriff's office for protection.
Initiative 695 would cut the motor vehicle tax, which partially supports local
police departments.
