Mechanical power transmission
apparatus. (1) Machines and other equipment shall not be
oiled while in motion, unless provided with guards or other
devices to permit oiling without any possibility of contact
with moving parts of machinery.
(2) Inspections shall be made to assure that shaftings,
bearings and machines are in proper alignment at all times and
that bolts in shaft hangars, couplings and boxes are tight.
(3) Isolated bearings or other equipment not reached by
walkway shall be served by a ladder or other means of safe
access.
(4) Running belts under power on or off pulleys shall be
accomplished by mechanical means which will not expose
employees to moving elements of the operation.
(5) Counterweights located on or near passageways or work
areas shall be provided with enclosures. Overhead
counterweights shall be provided with substantial safety
chains or cables, or otherwise secured against falling.
(6) The construction, operation, and maintenance of all
mechanical power-transmission apparatus shall be in accordance
with chapter 296-806 WAC, Machine safety.
(7) Baffles shall be erected, where necessary, to protect
employees from breaking belts, chains, ropes or cables.
(8) Overhead horizontal belts, chains or rope drives
shall be provided with guards.
(9) Hydraulic systems. Means shall be provided to block,
chain, or otherwise secure equipment normally supported by
hydraulic pressure so as to provide for safe maintenance.
