Log hauls. (1) Every log haul used as a walkway shall have at least one
walkway with standard railing to enable workers to stand clear
of the logs in the chute. Cleats shall be installed to
provide safe footing on sloping walkways.
(2) Workers shall not stand under or dangerously near to
logs that are being hoisted vertically to the log deck.
(3)(a) Log haul gears and bull chain drive mechanism
shall be adequately guarded for the protection of employees.
(b) Log haul bull chains or cable shall be designed,
installed, and maintained to provide a four to one safety
factor for the intended load.
(c) Troughs for the return strand of log haul chains
shall be provided over passageways.
(d) Overhead protection shall be provided for employees
working below logs being moved to the log deck.
(4) Log haul controls shall be arranged to operate from a
position where the operator will at all times be in the clear
of logs, machinery lines and rigging. Such controls shall
operate mechanism only when moved toward the log slip or deck.
(5) Where possible an automatic stop shall be installed
on all log hauls. A positive stop shall be installed on all
log hauls to prevent logs from traveling too far ahead in the
mill.
(6)(a) Slip persons shall handle pike poles in such
manner as to be in the clear in case of a slip back.
(b) All sorting gaps shall have a stiff boom on each
side.
(c) The banks of the log pond in the vicinity of the log
haul shall be reinforced to prevent caving in.
