Confidentiality of student records. The
Washington school for the deaf implements policy contained in
this chapter in compliance with the Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act of 1974, 20 U.S.C. Sec. 1232(g) (FERPA), and
the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), 20
U.S.C. § 1412 (a)(8). These laws establish that the education
records of students attending or having attended the school
are confidential and can be released only with written
permission of the parent (or adult student). The primary
rights of parents and adult students under FERPA are:
(1) To inspect and review education records;
(2) To request amendment of education records; and
(3) To have some control over the disclosure of
information from education records.
