4.08.010 Purpose.
The fire code advisory and appeals board is created to:
A. recommend legislation to the city council;
B. determine the suitability of alternate materials and types of construction or installation;
C. interpret the provisions of the Fire Code;
D. decide appeals from determinations of the fire official; and
E. perform such other functions as are appropriate for a board of appeals under the International Fire Code.

4.08.020 Members.
The board has five members consisting of one design professional, one representative of the flammable liquids and/or hazardous chemicals industry, one member of the fire protection trades, one licensed electrical safety technician, and one lay member. The fire official acts as secretary to the board.

4.08.030 Appointment.
Members are nominated by the mayor and appointed by the city council and may be removed for cause from office by the mayor with the approval of the city council. Appointments are made, whenever possible, from residents of the city or persons having a place of business in the city who are qualified by training and experience with expertise in the Fire Code. Members are appointed to staggered three-year terms and may be reappointed. Vacancies are filled by appointment in the same manner.

4.08.040 Meetings.
The board does not hold regular meetings but meets on the call of the chair in accordance with rules. Minutes of all meetings are kept as a public record. Hearings are held in accordance with SMC chapter 4.03.
