Footnotes

1. Notes

  • All dates are date filed with the Secretary of State.  Prior to 1889,  cities and towns were created by the  Territorial Legislature
  • Established as Chehalis County by territorial legislature in 1854. In 1907, the state legislature approved division of the county into two counties, Chehalis County and Grays Harbor County. The state supreme court ruled against the act, and in 1915 the legislature changed the name of the whole to Grays Harbor County. Information from private author, see foot three.
  • Information from Washington State Place Names written by James H. Phillips.
  • Many of the Citations  to  pre 1889 incorporations were  provided  by Steve Lundin, former Senior Counsel for the Washington State House of Representatives and author of The Closest Governments to the People: A Complete Reference Guide to Local Government in Washington, Washington State University, 2007.
  • Information on Seattle Annexation of small cities is supplemented by Quick Facts about the City of Seattle - Seattle City Clerk's Office
  • In 1979 archives were managed by OFM. An intern created a list of cities and towns based on records filed with the state. The term reorganized or reincorporated refers to provisions of Chapter VII of the Session Laws, 1889-1891.
