CLASS SPECIFICATION
RECREATION SUPERINTENDENT 2319
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Plans, organizes, and directs the City's ongoing comprehensive recreation program for youth, teens, adults, and senior citizens. Responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive recreational program that meets the needs of the community, within approved financial resources (and/or identifying alternative financial resources for program enactment or continuation).
CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY:
The Recreation Superintendent is responsible for the development, management, implementation and evaluation of the activities of the Recreation Division under the Department of Public Services. As such, the employee supervises a full-time recreation supervisor and senior citizen's program coordinator, aquatics program coordinator as well as part-time casual recreation specialist/coordinators and a large number of individual program instructors. The Recreation Superintendent reports to the Director of Public Services who reviews work performance for the cost effectiveness and quality of programs delivered. Work is performed with considerable independence, discretion, and initiative under the broad direction of the Director and department policies and procedures.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plans, develops, coordinates, promotes and implements a comprehensive citywide recreation program for all ages.
Manages the administrative functions of the division; develops division's preliminary budget and administers the final budget; recommends program fees and expenditures; monitors and tracks expenditures; coordinates staff training; conducts special projects including capital improvement planning and the development of new recreational facilities.
Coordinates recreation programming with the building maintenance supervisor, park superintendent, school district personnel, and representatives from other public agencies; plans and schedules sports programs and special events; supervises sports activities and evaluates programs, activities and classes.
Directs and monitors work of the recreation supervisor, senior citizens' program coordinator, acquatics program coordinator, other recreation specialist/coordinators, and individual program instructors; provides information and guidance on budgetary limits and resources.
Screens, interviews, and hires recreation staff, as well as instructors for contracted recreation classes; develops and assigns work schedules; plans and conducts orientation and training sessions; approves recreation staff time sheets; evaluates the work of subordinates.
Plans and directs publicity for recreation programs and special events; represents the division on various boards and committees; supervises the scheduling of a variety of City operated facilities; coordinates the operation of the recreation division with the administrative support staff and the public services director.
Attends work on a regular and dependable basis.
Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with city staff and the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(Persons applying for a position of this class should have any combination of the following experience and training.)
Three years of comprehensive recreation programming experience at a level equivalent to recreation supervisor; and a bachelor's degree in recreation program supervision or administration; or substituting additional experience for the degree. Certification as Parks and Recreation Professional is desired.

Work is performed primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer terminal for extended periods of time. However, some travel to a variety of locations to perform work and/or attend meetings is required. Physical exertion may be required to lift office supplies and recreation equipment.
