CLASS SPECIFICATION
HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC 2213
GENERAL PURPOSE: This is skilled automotive mechanical repair work.
Performs skilled automotive mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and auxiliary equipment with electronic components including vans with lifts, passenger buses, dump trucks, snow plows, sweepers, spreaders, tractors, power generators, automobiles, and pickup trucks. Work involves diagnosing malfunctions; performing preventive maintenance, and repairing or recommending repairs to be contracted out such as major overhauls or specialized repairs such as emission control systems. Diagnostic and repair activities cover a wide range of items including, but not limited to, engines with and without electronic fuel injection, transmissions with and without electronic controls, drive trains, rear-ends, brakes, clutches, electrical and air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, and welding (gas and arc) and fabricating brackets and other items. On occasion, repairs are made in the field.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Does not supervise the work of others.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the automotive repair supervisor who evaluates work performance for quality and timeliness of work performed.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Repairs and overhauls mechanical components on buses, automobiles, specialized and multi-purpose trucks, and other departmental equipment.
Inspects, tests, adjusts, repairs, and replaces complete or integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, driveshafts, differentials, and lubrication, cooling, exhaust, and brake systems as part of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program.
Tests, repairs, or rebuilds diesel engines and components, including injectors.
Inspects and adjusts bus door operation, air-ride system, and steering systems.
Diagnoses malfunctions and adjusts engine, fuel, electrical, and mechanical system to specifications including electronic fuel injection systems and electronically controlled transmissions.
Uses computer programs to diagnose and make adjustments.
Replaces and/or repairs parts to engines such as installing new fuel injectors, rods, new rings, bearings, aligns rods, grinds valves, grinds tappets, generators, starters, transmissions, differentials, drive lines, rear ends, radiators, air brake systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and oil and air filters, fuel filters, air pumps, water pumps, and fuel pumps.
Tunes engines by installing new point and condenser, cleaning and regapping spark plugs or putting in new plugs, setting carburetor or installing new or rebuilt carburetor, and adjusting tappets to correct clearance.

Performs inspection on buses; repairs or replaces front and rear doors; repairs hoists, pumps, and compressors.
Greases and lubricates automobiles, buses, and trucks; changes tires and installs and services batteries.
Attends work on a regular and dependable basis.
Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with city staff and the public.
Cleans garage; keeps accurate records of repairs and parts/supplies used; drives vehicles to return to shop or to ensure proper operation.

SELECTION FACTORS:

_ Considerable knowledge of the principles governing the operation and maintenance of diesel engines;
_ Considerable knowledge of the principles governing the operation and maintenance of internal combustion engines;
_ Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and technology used in the repair and maintenance of automotive and related equipment;
_ Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive repair trade;
_ Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanical trade;
_ Skill in repairing defects in a wide variety of automotive equipment;
_ Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic failures;
_ Ability to read, comprehend, and apply technical instructions in a variety of repair manuals;
_ Ability to adapt successfully to the wide range of equipment repaired in the shop;
_ Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions and to interpret hydraulic and electrical plans and sketches;
_ Ability to safely operate gas and arc welding equipment to fabricate parts or mounting equipment;
_ Ability to learn new technology and terminology of modern automotive equipment;
_ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and other city employees;
_ Ability to keep accurate records of time and supplies;
_ Ability to provide quality services in a cost-effective manner and to recommend improved methods of performing the work;
_ Ability to physically perform the essential functions of the job;
_ Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as evidenced by a good driving record;
_ Possession of standard automobile mechanics tools at the time of appointment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(Persons applying for a position of this class should have any combination of the following experience and training.)
Two years of automotive equipment diagnostic and repair experience on gasoline and diesel equipment and related hydraulic and electronic systems; or substituting successful completion of technical training in gasoline or diesel automotive and related repair for up to one year of the experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Possession of Class B commercial driver's license.

Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes; power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; phone.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds.
The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
