JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: VICTIM/WITNESS ASSISTANT

DEPARTMENT: PROSECUTING ATTORNEY
APPOINTMENT: This is a regular, half time, non-exempt, position.
SUPERVISOR RELATIONSHIP:

The Victim/Witness Assistant reports to the Office Administrator, and maintains close working relationships with administrative and other personnel, public agencies, and the general public. This position works under the guidance of State and Federal regulation, and County policies and procedures.

JOB SUMMARY:

The victim/Witness Assistant is responsible performing the duties prescribed for the Crime Victim/Witness Program for Upper and Lower District Courts, Juvenile Court and Superior Court by providing assistance to crime victims, prosecutor’s office and other organizations working in the Criminal Justice System.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

70% Victim/Witness Interaction and Mediation

  • Prepare and send correspondence to victims advising them of court dates, explaining court procedures and their rights to be present.
  • Assist victims in filling out Application for Crime Victims Compensation and corresponding with the Department of Labor and Industries CVC program and referring victims to other organizations when appropriate.
  • Make motel and travel arrangements for out of town victims and witnesses.
  • Coordinate and accompany victims and witnesses to meetings with (deputy) prosecutor and defense counsel.
  • Accompany victims to court as their support person during hearings and trials.
  • Obtain figures and compute victim’s restitution for inclusion in Judgment and Sentence and/or Restitution Order. This may include restitution for Crime Victims Compensation, Labor and Industries and insurance companies that have a loss as a result of a crime. May be asked to prepare Restitution Order.

30% Research, Training and Report Writing

  • Attend Victim/Witness training seminars and other pertinent training programs and/or conferences to keep informed of current victim/witness statutes.
  • Represent Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on the Victim Offender Mediation Steering Committee and be willing and able to participate on other committees if asked.
  • Prepare quarterly statistics report for VAWA/Stop Grant and Prosecutor’s Annual Report.
  • Research innovative victim/witness programs and investigate potential revenue sources.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work or closely related field AND two years legal experience working with victims. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications.
  • No criminal convictions or pending unresolved criminal matters.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures, office machines, legal terminology and Victims Compensation Program.
  • Two years of computer experience.

  • None

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The person in this position will be required to work in an office setting with periods of standing, sitting, and kneeling. Work hours are standard with some weekend and evening work as needed. Regular attendance is required. Periodic travel will be required for ongoing training opportunities.
