SEWER DEPARTMENT
WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT MECHANIC
REPORTS TO: WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT FOREMAN

MISSION:

To maintain the Ellensburg Wastewater Treatment plant in optimum operating condition.

SUMMARY:

Repair, maintain and troubleshoot a variety of electrical motors, pumps and gas equipment, gasoline engines and hydraulic equipment. Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair work, utilizing welding, fabricating, and electrical skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

All of the following are to be performed while adhering to City of Ellensburg operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.

Repair, Maintain, and Troubleshoot Equipment:

      Repair equipment including but not limited to lift stations, pumps, motors, electrical panels, and hydraulics

      Perform welding, torching, braising, electrical and mechanical procedures

      Read and understand maintenance manuals, diagrams and blueprints

      Oil and grease equipment; adjust belts and chain drives

      Monitor temperatures and gas pressures

      Inspect for wear and vibration

      Monitor automatic oilers for level and efficiency

      Troubleshoot equipment failure or loss of efficiency

      Operate electrical voltage meters, Amp meter, and RPM meters

Record Keeping:
      Maintain accurate records of routine checks on lift stations and other equipment

      Record maintenance activities and repair work performed

      Record equipment efficiency

      Maintain records of cleaning and filling of beds

Parts and Equipment:
      Determine need for spare parts and new equipment

      Research new equipment and determine desired equipment specifications

      Perform price/quality comparisons

      Purchase equipment

      Install mechanical and electrical equipment

Plant Operations and Collections:
      Assist operations function as needed

      Assist collection crew in flushing, jetting, rodding, inspections, locates, construction and repairs of sewers and storm sewers

Biosolids Handling:
      Operate biosolids pumping dredge

      Monitor hydraulic levels and temperature to assure continued pumping

      Add piping as needed

      Regularly clean pump and auger

      Operate loader to maintain drying beds

      Collect samples for laboratory analysis

Maintenance of Buildings and Grounds:
      Repair irrigation systems

      Perform electrical and fabrication procedures

      Clean and maintain shop area

      Clean areas around equipment

Miscellaneous:
      Perform on call/call outs as rotation requires

      Resolve problems of high water level, power outages, lift stations failures, pumps and motor failures

      Provide assistance to other wastewater personnel and public works departments as needed

      Serve as acting foreman as assigned

      Maintain public relations

      Attend weekly safety meetings

Other duties may be assigned.

May supervise temporary and part-time workers.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.       EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

      One year certificate from college or technical school; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

      LANGUAGE SKILLS:
      Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
      MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

      Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

      NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

      (A) Thorough knowledge of electrical motors; Considerable knowledge of pumps, gas equipment, gas engines, hydraulics, and welding;

      Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.

      (B) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.

      (C) Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures; Ability to maintain effective accounting procedures; Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS CONT.
      SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

      Valid State Driver's license, or ability to obtain one. Commercial Driver's License.

      TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

      Motor vehicles, power and hand tools, voltage meters, amp meters, RPM meters, mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee may work in confined spaces.
