LIBRARY SPECIALIST
REPORTS TO: LIBRARY ASSOCIATE
MISSION:
To provide specialized reference skills to patrons; or to provide specialized skills in cataloging; Provide check out services and act as the person in charge in the absence of senior staff, when scheduled on evenings and weekends.
SUMMARY:
Register patrons; provide information on library policies and services; assist patrons with the computer catalog; check library materials in and out; collect and record fines and fees; answer reference questions using standard reference sources and computer CD ROMs; Call patrons for reserves and interlibrary loans, help patrons with Local History requests; Sort and shelve returned items when Library Assistant staff time is insufficient. Search LaserCat for MARC cataloging records for adding new library materials; edit and download into library database. Create bibliographic entries for materials cataloged without MARC records. Maintain database and revise cataloging as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
All of the following are to be performed while adhering to City of Ellensburg operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.
Reference Duties:

Knowledge of Internet and ability to give patrons training for use
Demonstrate use of computer catalog and assist patrons in use
Locate items in catalog and on shelves for patrons as needed
Locate information for patrons using standard reference sources in books and CD ROM databases to answer questions
Maintain newspaper indexing project
Provide access to items in closed stacks of Local History collection; assist with Local History research
Answer telephone inquiries

Search LaserCat database and WLN Online and identify correct MARC cataloging
records for library materials
Add local information to record; perform other necessary editing and download records via NetMarc into local database
Draft MARC records for selected items not found in LaserCat or Online and enter into local database
Create Dynix bibliographic entries for juvenile and young adult paperbacks and other materials cataloged without MARC records
Batch items for further work and review by cataloging supervisor.
When items are discarded, remove items from the database
Help to identify and correct cataloging problems in database; revise cataloging records; enter holdings information on WLN for updating database
Attend workshops and training to keep up to date with changes in cataloging practices
Perform and oversee procedures for processing and bar coding of paperbacks, magazines, and other uncataloged materials

Register patrons and issue library cards; refer problems to supervisor
Provide information on library circulation policies, fines, fees,etc.
Assist patrons in placing holds or interlibrary loan requests as needed

Notify patrons when reserved items, interlibrary loans are received
Collect and record payment of fines and fees; refer damaged items to supervisor
Check items out to patrons
Provide information about library programs and services, orally and with flyers
Operate library equipment as appropriate
Assist patrons with summer reading program information and materials
Report behavior problems to supervisor or person in charge, or take appropriate action
Check items in accurately to clear patron records
Review physical condition of items for completeness, damages, soil, mending, etc.
Perform opening and closing procedures; secure cash and building as assigned
Report problems with equipment or building systems to supervisor and director

Accomplish training assignments and attend regular staff meetings
Maintain supply of forms, paper, pens, tape, labels, etc., or request from supervisor
Keep desks, cabinets, and work areas, supplies and equipment orderly for shared use
Act as person in charge in absence of senior staff

No on-going supervision. Acts as person in charge of library, in absence of senior staff, when scheduled on evenings and weekends.
TYPE OF SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Quantity and quality of employee's work is subject to a close check by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Two years of college or specialized education in appropriate skills. And one year related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
First aid and CPR certification
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
A) Knowledge of general office practice and procedures; knowledge of basic principles of library practices and procedures, knowledge of bibliographic data and MARC cataloging practices; knowledge of reference resources; some knowledge of personal computer software and equipment. Must not disclose confidential information to which employee is exposed to daily.

B) Interviewing skills to determine patron information needs; Skill in keyboard
and computer data entry; skill in applying copy cataloging procedures to cataloging
of library materials; skill in data base searching techniques; operation of
listed tools and equipment
C) Ability to be courteous and tactful with the general public; Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; to implement policy and procedure; to exercise initiative and judgment in completing tasks; to organize various activities; Ability to be accurate when working with extremely detailed tasks with exact rules; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public.

Tasks affected include shelving books, computer work, watching patrons while working, shelving by using colored dots, and retrieving books and information.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to airborne particles and the risk of electrical shock. The employee may work a considerable amount of time at a computer terminal.
