LIBRARY ASSISTANT
REPORTS TO: LIBRARY ASSOCIATE
MISSION:
Assist patrons to locate and check out library materials, maintain accurate patron records, check in returned items and maintain shelf order.
SUMMARY:
Register patrons for library cards, provide information about library circulation policies; assist patrons with the computer catalog and locating items, check library materials out, check in returned items, collect payment of fines and fees; sort and shelve returned items, keep items in order on the shelves, search for missing items, answer basic reference questions by using standard reference sources; provide information on library programs and services. Perform duties in outreach circulation, interlibrary loans, reserves, Local History collection, typing and filing; process magazines, paperbacks and other uncataloged items; new book processing, mending, book jackets, etc.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
All of the following are to be performed while adhering to City of Ellensburg operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.
Patron Service:

Register patrons and issue library cards; refer problems to supervisor
Inform patrons on library circulation policies, fines, fees, etc.
Demonstrate use of computer catalog and assist patrons in use
Locate items in catalog and on shelves for patrons
Assist patrons in placing holds or interlibrary loan requests
Notify patrons when reserved items, interlibrary loans are received
Collect and record payment of fines and fees; refer damaged items to supervisor
Check items out to patrons
Locate information for patrons using standard reference sources in books and CD ROM databases to answer questions; refer to reference staff as needed
Provide access to items in closed stacks of Local History collection when appropriate
Provide information about library programs and services, orally and with flyers
Answer telephone inquiries
Operate library equipment as appropriate
Assist patrons with summer reading program information and materials
Report behavior problems to supervisor or person in charge, or take appropriate action

Check items in accurately to clear patron records; empty book drop and
check items in
Review physical condition of items for completeness, damages, soil, mending, etc.
Sort materials into collection divisions
Place sorted items onto carts and return items to library shelves in correct order
Read shelves to maintain correct shelf order of all items; search for missing items
Process new paperbacks, magazines, and other uncataloged materials
Mend, recover and relabel older items as needed
Keep Local History collection in order;
Remove items from tables, check in and reshelve as appropriate

Maintain supply of forms, paper, pens, tape, labels, etc., or request from
supervisor
Keep desks, cabinets, and work areas, supplies and equipment orderly for shared use
Perform opening and closing procedures as instructed by supervisor
Report problems with equipment or building systems to supervisor and director

Attend staff training workshops and regular monthly meetings
Assist in sending fax requests and processing interlibrary loans
Provide circulation service for rotating and outreach collections
Take requests for photo prints, tapes, etc.
Perform missing item searches
Create booklists and/or book mark flyers
Clean equipment and maintain library appearance

TYPE OF SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Quantity and quality of employee's work is subject to a close check by the circulation supervisor.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
A) Some knowledge of general office practice and procedures; some knowledge of library organization and purpose; knowledge of alphabetical and whole/decimal number filing;
B) Skill in keyboard and computer data entry; operation of listed tools and equipment; ability to maintain confidentiality of patron records.
C) Ability to be courteous and tactful with the general public; Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; to implement policy and procedure; to exercise initiative and judgment in completing tasks; to organize various activities; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public.

The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Tasks affected include shelving books, computer work, watching patrons while working, shelving by using colored dots, and processing books.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions for brief periods and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. Sharp utensils are used in some tasks.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
