JOB SUMMARY

As part of GIS technical staff in the IS, Transportation, Planning, or Utilities Department, is responsible for a wide variety of production tasks and some task supervision in the City's GIS Programs. Assists Senior GIS Analyst, Lead GIS Analyst, and IS Manager in meeting service level commitments such as maintenance of corporate GIS data assets; supporting business applications; and filling requests for data, products, and services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Creates new computer programs, or edits existing programs, using ArcInfo software's Arc Macro Language (AML), in order to produce maps and automate procedures.

· Updates parcel and attribute database using ArcInfo software.

· Operates computer workstation to update maps as new data is received relative to new development, projects and zoning requirements.

· Develops and maintains links between various databases;

· Writes documentation as necessary.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Works under the administrative supervision of an IS Manager or operating department. May be supervised on a task basis by a senior or Lead GIS Analyst.

No formal supervisory responsibilities. May provide work assignments to intern and/or temporary staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRMENTS

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geography or other related field(s).

Two or more years of progressively responsible related experience in designing and building GIS databases, as well as programming languages and applications.

Or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

Thorough knowledge of GIS software, such as ArcView, and ArcInfo (especially ArcEdit); knowledge of digitizing and data manipulation procedures for geographic information systems.

Ability to read and interpret legal descriptions; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to use graphic instructions such as blueprints, layouts or other visual aids.

Familiarity with and ability to use effectively Microsoft Office modules.
