MAINTENANCE WORKER

Nature of Work

This is a semi-technical position in the maintenance of city owned utilities, streets, facilities, and vehicles.

Controls Over the Work

Under supervisory control and guidance of the Public Works Director and/or Public Works Supervisor and/or Public Works Foreman and/or Job Foreman, the incumbent's work is performed with some latitude for independent judgment and action. Assignments are received in the form of oral instruction, work orders, established maintenance and service schedules, blueprints, sketches, and rough notes. Work requires the application of sound judgment and the application of crafts techniques in a wide variety of public works activities. Work is reviewed for quality and timeliness of completed projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Engages in a wide variety of tasks such as maintenance and repair of water mains and services; sewer mains and services; cleaning roadside ditches, culverts and catch basins; repairing streets and sidewalks; and fills in as a laborer when required.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • Knowledge of material, methods, and techniques commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas of specialization.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being done.
  • Good knowledge of the utilization and care of materials and equipment used.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Performs other duties as required by designated supervisors.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed primarily out-of-doors involving moderate risks, discomfort, or unpleasantness such as high level of noise, dust, grease or mud; moving vehicles or machines, cold and/or wet weather. It may be necessary to wear some protective clothing and/or equipment such as rain and snow gear, boots, goggles, and gloves. Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven surfaces, and recurring bending, crouching, stopping and reaching, and occasional lifting of moderately heavy items. Work requires average physical agility and dexterity.

Qualifications Required

One year work experience in utility type work and high school education or G.E.D.

Physical Examination.
