PRESS RELEASE

RE: Governor's Energy Supply Alert
On January 26, 2001, Governor Locke issued an energy supply alert Order No. 01-03 directed to all state and local governments. In it he has instructed all state, county, cities and towns to take measures to reduce energy consumption by 10%. With this in mind, we the Whitman County Board of Commissioners are asking you to join us in complying with the Governor's instructions.
The county has met with its Incident Team Committee composed of representatives from the major elected and appointed departments, to develop a plan to achieve this goal. Some of the quickly achievable items are being implemented now. Other longer term ones are being assessed and those selected will be implemented as soon as practical. We ask you to join us in achieving the Governor's request in helping make Whitman County the first county to fully comply both in spirit and deed.
Thank you for joining our team effort. A list of items and ideas being discussed is attached. Please call us with your suggestions too. Every idea counts. Let's show them that the power in Whitman County is in its people and their ideas.
In order to meet these requirements, the Board of Whitman County Commissioners is implementing the following cost-savings measures:
1. Temperature in all office areas will be reduced 2 degrees from 8am-5pm.
2. Temperature in the Courthouse, Weed, and Public Service Buildings will be reduced additionally after 5pm and on weekends.
3. Motion sensors will be installed in all restroom facilities.
4. Heat in conference room areas will be reduced 4 degrees.
5. Energy saving EXIT lights will be installed in all buildings.
6. Auto timers have been installed on all vending machines.
7. Continuing a planned program to replace inefficient lights with energy efficient lights (project in the Commissioners Chambers represents a 30% energy savings).
8. Non-essential lighting has been shut off (i.e. lights on the statue, flag, clock, and some over-lit areas).
9. Temperature on water heaters in the Public Service and Weed Buildings will be lowered to a minimum setting.
10. Turning off copy machines/computers when not in use of an hour or more.
11. Turning off office lighting when not in use.
12. Notifying the Facilities Management Department of areas that are over-lit so they can be de-lighted.
13. Employees are being encouraged to use the stairs instead of the elevator when possible/practical.
14. Employees will no longer use space heaters.
