Topics related to Web site redesign and management
Topics related to Web site redesign and management
Members of the group provided advice on effective site redesign
and other site management issues:
- Following web standards is essential during site redesign
- Look at different information architectures when redesigning
sites
- Accept city- or county-wide design standards
- Choose standards using a steering committee or a third-party
contractor
- Get feedback on proposed standards from departments and get
high-level support from officials and managers
- Adopt same design standards in all departments and make them
easily available for reference
- Have edited pages from department editors checked in after
review
- Don't reinvent the wheel during your redesign if you can take
advantage of new applications, like those on www.eCityGov.net
- Carefully consider the implications of content management
systems and review your process of publishing pages
- For emergency management purposes, Tom Braman of King County recommended establishing a secondary domain name hosted by an out-of-state entity; in this case the secondary domain name is hosted by another government whose own backup domain name is hosted by King County
- Snohomish County is using a Google Mini appliance for its search system
