Local Government Webmasters Meeting Presentations
Setting up live Webcams
Francois Caen, Webmaster, city of Lakewood
This discussion covered remote surveillance, cool PR factor cameras, digital video recording, networking and bandwidth requirements, and was based on the existing implementation of two webcams in a Lakewood skateboard park, as well as on a large-scale Lakewood Parks monitoring project.
The following links are the ones referred to in the presentation. You can also look at a diagram of how the Lakewood webcams are set up.
A good vendor of IP-based cameras or video servers is Axis. You may have heard of that brand since the print servers used by your Municipal/County court to print from the State's mainframe are Axis too.
I placed my order of Axis gear from a1webcams.com . I always appreciate
a vendor who is willing to spend 45 minutes on the phone educating me.

The cameras we bought were Silent Witness installed by Allied Security. I have enjoyed working with this vendor, even though we still have an unresolved interference issue.

A piece of software that monitors various IP cameras is NetVM from
d3data.com. Some say it's the best thing since sliced bread, some say it's not ready for prime time. Worth at least looking into.
