SUMMARY: The person in this position is responsible for enforcing animal control ordinances, investigating animal complaints, caring for impounded animals, and for the humane disposal of injured, diseased and unclaimed animals according to all applicable laws.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Responds to complaints of animal cruelty, animal bites, property damage, and stray and injured animals.
Patrols and picks up animals identified as nuisance animals and transports them to the animal shelter.
Maintains a log of incoming calls, action taken and other information required for proper documentation. Completes the required daily, monthly, and annual reports on all activities.
Assures that all animals in the City limits have the appropriate license(s).
Performs other duties as assigned.
Works overtime as required to complete assigned tasks.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Graduate or have a GED. Have one (1) year of animal control experience, one (1) year of work in emergency services or law enforcement; or have an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training that would provide the level of knowledge and ability required for the position.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must have strong communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with public, using tact and discretion, in responding to questions, comments and complaints from citizens in a calm, professional manner. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, and to write clear and accurate reports.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to complete accurate mathematical calculations as required of the position.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to work within established guidelines with little direct supervision. Ability to deal with general public in all types of situations arising during daily work activities, and ability to use a high degree of sound judgment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Requires a Legend Drug License for use of a dart gun and a First-Aid/CPR card. Must have, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Washington State Motor Vehicle Operator's License and have the ability to follow Washington State Motor Vehicle Laws.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to use personal computer (IBM compatible), telephone, CO2 powered dart gun, catch pole, ropes, and miscellaneous hand tools. Ability to give injections with syringes.

Most work is typically performed in an outdoor environment in all types of weather conditions and in situations which can be physically hazardous from traffic, irate citizens and/or animals, being exposed to fumes, chemicals, or toxic substances and working with sharp tools. Employee must have the ability to retrieve animals from small enclosed areas.
