JOB SUMMARY

Manages, directs and coordinates the activities of the Regional Communications Center; coordinates activities with other divisions, departments, and contract agencies; and provides highly complex staff assistance to the Communications Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Answers questions and provides information to the public; investigates complaints and recommends corrective action as necessary.

· Responsible for coordinating and responding to the operational needs of contract agencies.

· Meets with elected or appointed officials, other public safety officials, and the public on aspects of the communication center's activities; and serves on county, city and state committees and task teams.

· Handles grievances and maintains discipline and the general behavior of assigned personnel. Prepares and submits periodic reports to the governing body regarding activities, and prepares a variety of other reports as appropriate.

· Cooperates with county, state and federal law enforcement, fire and legal representatives as appropriate where activities of the center are involved.

· Participates in labor negotiations.

· Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the communication center budget.

· Serves as acting Communication Manager in the absence of the Communication Manager.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Works under the general supervision of the Communications Manager.

Exercises supervision over the Communications Supervisors, Dispatchers, Lead Dispatchers, and administrative support staff either directly or indirectly through supervisors, as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRMENTS

High school diploma or GED required.

Five or more years of progressively responsible related experience in a multi-agency public safety communications center, as well as supervisory experience.

Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Washington State Driver's License required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

Considerable knowledge of modern public safety communications practices, procedures, techniques, and equipment; considerable knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and standard operating procedures related to emergency public safety communications; considerable knowledge of computers and computer- aided dispatching; working knowledge of modern principles and practices of public administration.

Ability to train and supervise staff; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, peers and supervisors; ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; ability to give verbal and written instructions.
